Strengthening the lower body is very important for a number of reasons. It adds lean muscle mass, keeps you functionally strong, and is great for any fat loss workout program.

In most gyms, the majority of people only do leg exercises with machines such as the leg press, leg extension, leg curl, calf presses, etc. While these exercises can be challenging when done correctly, they are only a few of the options you have to get a great leg workout in the gym.

One of the best new things you can try is doing leg exercises that involve your own bodyweight in the standing position. This makes you balance more and gives you a whole new way to strengthen your legs. Some of the standing leg workouts you can do involve exercises such as squats, lunges, split squats, hamstring pushups, leg curls on the stability ball, and more.

One of the absolute best leg exercises you can do is called a Bulgarian split squat.  Below is a video demonstration of what this exercise looks like. If you have never tried this before, start with your rear foot on the ground instead of elevated. Elevating the back foot will give you more of a stretch in the quad muscle and the front leg will be working very hard.

Avoid this exercise if you have any kind of chronic knee pain. Check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program.
